The Importance Of Movement for Spinal Health
Where is the first place you go when you start feeling back pain? If you’re like most people, you immediately
retreat to the couch to rest. It’s convenient to sprawl out all day to avoid the pain. While you wait it out doing nothing, the better approach would be to keep your back moving.
Here at Next Level Wellness Center in Irvine, I often encourage my patients to get up and get moving since it plays a key role in treating back pain.
Getting Up and Moving
It may not seem to make sense to patients at first, but resting for long periods of time can actually hinder your body’s healing after a back injury. Instead, exercising is necessary to help get rid of your back pain. Exercising is a broad term, and instead of hitting the gym hard and lifting heavy, if you’re suffering from a back injury it is important to exercise in a controlled, moderate manner. This way, your back is protected, and the active movement will still encourage distribution of nutrients to your lower back. These nutrients can alleviate stiffness, reduce pain reoccurrence, and aid in the prevention of further pain.
Ideal Exercises for Back Pain
Avoid getting back on the field or rushing the court, when your lower back is injured tailor your exercise program to your injury. We typically prescribe an exercise recovery program that, depending on your diagnosis, includes stretching, strengthening and low-impact aerobic exercise.
Stretching is crucial as it aids in flexibility in the body’s muscles, ligaments, and tendons. Strengthening exercises will help the injured back to regain its strength as it recovers. With low-impact aerobic exercise, we usually advise our patients to ride a stationary bike or elliptical machine. These don’t place extra stress on the joints or spine but still provide a solid conditioning exercise.
It is critical to see a chiropractic specialist for lower back pain treatment if your back pain does not go away or lessen in severity. Chiropractic consultation will determine the source of pain and extent of the damage. At Next Level Wellness Center, we will create a personalized recovery plan using a combination of therapies and treatments.
