3 Ways To Take Care Of Your Body When You’re On Your Feet All Day

Construction workers

While sitting at a desk all day isn’t healthy, standing all day can cause adverse effects as well if you don’t take the proper precautions. Whether you’re a speaker, a teacher, a hairdresser, or someone who works at a stand-up desk, our Next Level Wellness team has a few tips to help your muscles and joints stay healthy and strong:

Place An Anti-Fatigue Mat Under Your Feet

When you’re standing your body has to constantly tense certain muscles to maintain an upright position. Doing this on a hard surface for a prolonged period of time can lead to joint pain and spinal compression. However, if you place a cushioned mat under your feet, you’ll be less likely to experience pain in your ankles and feet. The mat will keep you supported and standing upright.

Wear Comfortable Shoes

Being on your feet all day can be tiring, but it doesn’t have to cause you aches and pains. When you’re picking out shoes for work, choose a pair that has good arch support and are well cushioned. Not only does this help your feet, but it will improve your posture too.

Stand With Good Posture

One of the most important things to remember when you’re on your feet all day is to maintain good posture. If you’re working at a computer at your standing desk, make sure your eyes are looking straight ahead at your computer. Always keep your stomach in and your shoulders level. This keeps your spine aligned and puts less strain on your back and neck. If you move around during the day, remind yourself to take note of your posture and use your back muscles to pull your shoulders back and down (away from your ears) when you remember. Exercises that strengthen your core, like Yoga or Pilates, will improve your posture and help your body build the strength to maintain good alignment throughout the day.
