Common Youth Baseball and Softball Injuries and How to Stay F.I.T.

Baseball Kid

A sure sign that spring is here is that Little League, Pony baseball, and softball have had their opening day ceremonies around Irvine, Tustin, Newport Beach, and Costa Mesa and our kids are once again taking the field. This means some of our kids who had a nice winter off are back out practicing and playing games.

Our team at Next Level Wellness in Irvine wants to make sure that your little slugger or pitcher will enjoy this season without pain.   Most kids don’t have a proper evaluation of their tendons, ligaments, joints, and muscles before beginning or resuming a sport, and some kids will experience new or lingering pains and play through them thinking they are minor.

One common injury area that we see with youth baseball and softball players is the wrist. This injury can be from a variety of repetitive movements like pitching, swinging a bat or even fielding with a glove.   While your player may feel the pain in the wrist, the injury usually occurs within our forearm muscles as they work overtime. Our forearm flexors flex, our extensors extend.

One easy exercise your child can do if her or she has very minor pain is with a tennis ball.   Simply have them put their forearm on a tennis ball on a hard surface like a desk, table, or even a wall, and roll out the muscle.

If your child finds that the pain isn’t subsiding, you may want to see one of our specialists. We offer our $79 student-athlete Stay F.I.T. special. Fascial Integrative Treatment, or F.I.T., is an innovative and advanced soft-tissue system that treats problems with muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia, nerves, and joints. It is a manual hands-on therapy that corrects the dysfunctions that these soft-tissues can undergo. We work with youth athletes from all ages from 5 year olds to college and professional players. We’ve even worked with athletes from UCI, the Los Angeles Dodgers, and the Los Angeles Lakers.
