How To Manage Herniated Disc Pain

Here in Orange County, many of us have adopted a “work hard, play hard” lifestyle. But sometimes the endless workdays or rigorous activities can catch up with us. Whether back pain and herniated discs stem from a compression injury or wear and tear, the pain can be unbearable at times.

Chronic lower back pain is one of the most common ailments people will suffer from over their lifetime. Approximately 80% of people will experience lower back pain during their lives, and a high percentage of those injuries will be from a herniated disc.  I know what our Irvine chiropractic team at Next Level Wellness can do to get you back on track. Here are a few things you can do.

Boost Your Immunity

While it may feel like your body is angry with you, it has a quick response to the pain. If you are generally healthy, your body will be in a better position to combat the pain and fatigue in the injured area. It can take a good several weeks for your body to heal but you can help the process by eating a healthy diet, drinking lots of water, and taking supplements. Obviously, an anti-inflammatory diet is important.

Stretch Lightly

Because our backs take the bulk of pressure on a daily basis from all the things we do – walking, running, sitting, and driving – it is important for us to decompress our spines. Here is an easy stretch. I want you to do this when you get home. Lie down on your back and put your legs up against a wall. This simple stretch is not only relaxing after a long day of work, but it is also great for your lower back. Help your back out at bedtime by putting an extra pillow under your knees.

Exercise Daily

I know how it is after a long day.   We just want to come home and unwind on the sofa. But your back will thank you if you get up and move a little. It’s been hot lately, hitting close to 90 in Irvine.   If you have access to a pool, go for a dip. You can do laps, or just do some simple maneuvers in the pool to get your body moving. I also suggest yoga or a good jog.
