If you have said, “I can’t have tennis elbow, I don’t play tennis,” you may want to think again. Tennis elbow is a very common injury that spans beyond the kings and queens of the court. Most of my patients don’t even play a racquet sport. Believe it or not, more people are injured using their computer mice and smartphones these days! Don’t worry. The Next Level Wellness team has got you covered.
What is formally known as Lateral Epicondylitis, this condition affects the muscles and tendons of the forearm, surrounding the outside area of the elbow. This injury can hurt and leave you struggling to do many common things around the house.
Small tendon tears on the lateral side of your arm cause this pain. Typically, this isn’t one major injury but is more the result of a repetitive injury. The injury may be small tears, but they can really hurt! Your grip can suffer greatly, sometimes even preventing you from holding a coffee cup or soda can for prolonged periods. It is common for some people to mistake this pain for carpal tunnel syndrome.
As always, I recommend rest for a patient with a chronic injury. But treatment can also get those hurting back in action with less pain or pain-free. Rest allows the muscles to heal. You’ll want to be aware of Inflammation and potential scar tissue. This can exacerbate the pain. We may have you work with a tennis ball to help work out some of the muscles and massage therapy can also help.
